As you're all probably aware, the latest economic doom meme that's been all over the news lately is that the housing bubble has burst. While many experts disagree* that the housing bubble has burst, and some say that it will only result in years of stagnation in the housing market, the general concensus seems to be that the boom times for real estate are over. Now, I've never been good at economics, but I've got to wonder about something. [...]read more »

OK, here's a new game. Well, probably not new because someone certainly has thought of this before. But, if you have a website, what is the strangest, funniest, or most disturbing search phrase used to find your website recently? I was just looking through my stats and 'certified humane new yorker' just struck me as humorous. I live in NY State, but I don't think I've ever been certified as humane (or human now that I think of it).

A Cherry Valley Christmas (tree)

More snow! We missed out on the big lake effect storm that was supposed to bring us about a foot and a half but we still got a pretty good covering. I'd say between 6 and 9 inches. Finally got the Christmas tree up though! Not really, that happens to be the tree that stands on the corner outside my office window. I had too much coffee yesterday so I snapped that photo about 5am this morning. Too cold to open the window so it's a pretty crappy photo. This concludes your irregular Friday useless blog post.

So, I'm listening to Twisted Sister's 1984 album Stay Hungry and I'm wondering what music you all like that isn't, shall we say, "critically acclaimed"? Or, to put it another way, what music do you listen to that your friends would ridicule you for? Smiling

BTW: I'm a huge Styx fan too, but that doesn't count because my friends were also. And besides, Styx (until the real band broke up in 1984) did some amazingly progressive rock.

So, driving home from BigBoxMart tonight I caught Michael Savage on the radio railing on about Google Earth. Apparently Michael Savage (does anyone else think he sounds like Milton from Office Space?) thinks Google Earth can be used by the terraists to target locations for terrar attacks and thus Google are aiding the terrarists and should be shut down. He comes to this amazing conclusion because Google Earth shows lattitude and longitude. Apparently Mssr. Savage (I use Mssr. because whiny Michel hates the French so I'm sure it'll piss him off) has never heard of U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps produced by that well known terrarist organization the U.S. Government and sold by terrarists such as the guy who sells worms for fishing down the street from me -- terrarist worms.

I just heard on a local NPR affiliate that 18% of the front pages of the newspapers shown at the Newseum ran stories about the launch of the XBox 360. Sorry, no confirming link.

I'm off for turkey day dinner at a friend's house. I hope all of you have someone special to spend the day with. Back later this evening or tomorrow.

First Snow 2005
First snowfall of 2005 in Cherry Valley, NY.

Well, it looks like our first big snow of 2005 wasn't. Originally the NWS out of Binghamton was forecasting 7 or 8 inches by this evening. Temperatures have remained a little higher than predicted so most of it came down as rain. That's not to say anything though as the weather changes rapidly around here. We could still see a few inches.

The photo is taken from out the window of NG HQ high atop the Gilday building in bustling downtown Cherry Valley (pop. 650), birthplace of the information superhighway. Centered you can see the eagle perched on the top of the Civil War Monument.

Cricket Match
Cricket match, Eton vs. Haverford. 1896 albumen photograph.
I hate baseball. There. I've said it. For a lot of people that's a bigger heresy than saying you're an atheist. I grew up in Cooperstown, NY. You know — the "Home of Baseball"? I mean, how can you not hate baseball growing up in a town that has been so thoroughly saturated by the game and on which legions of fans descend every summer?

That being so, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for cricket, a game that resembles, but is entirely unlike, baseball. Maybe I have Peter Davison to thank for that, though I don't think that's it. When one comes right down to it my fascination with cricket has more to do with the fact that I am completely and utterly at a loss to understand what actually goes on during a match. I've tried, really I have. I've read rule books. I've watched games. I even bought a cricket video game once but I just don't get it. It all seems so, so, well — senseless! That's why when I was poking around the web this evening looking for something to write about that wouldn't raise my blood pressure, I was delighted to run across this article in The Independent. Why? Because it proves I'm not the only one:

Cricket is the only game in the world where the commentary is more important than what is actually being commented on. That is to say, many true cricket lovers prefer to hear a Test match being described on radio than see the game on TV.

They will quite happily admit that even when watching on TV you often have no idea what has happened till you are told. That is why it is vitally necessary to understand what the commentators are saying.read more »

See? Even the British will tell you that they're completely clueless as to what actually happens during a game of cricket. They have to be told! It also seems learning a foreign language is involved and I guess this article is as good a cheatsheet as anything Berlitz publishes. I still don't understand the game, but at least I can pretend I do the next time I listen to a match on the World Service.
