There's an old saying that states, roughly, that the nail that sticks up will eventually be hammered. Well, yes, that's true, and unlike other carpertry-related sayings, such as "Measure twice, cut once" is actually somewhat related to the human condition in general (although "measure twice, cut once" is a good rule of thumb, generally speaking). So here we are, atheist, agnostics, and plain ol' skeptics, sticking up from the rest of the nails, waiting for the inevitable hammer to knock us into place. But the metaphor breaks down in the face of human resiliency. We may get beat up, hammered down, sanded, spackled, and otherwise treated like a penny nail, but we can get up again. In fact, we MUST get up again, if only to spit in the eye of the bastard with the tool belt.
