American society has spent a lot of time coddling and catering to Xians.  We have allowed them to impose prayer on our school children, we have allowed them to change the face of our money, we have applauded them for changing the text of our pledge of allegiance.  Xians have the only federally recognized holiday on the calendar.  Xians have enjoyed a history of privilege in this country, and in fact, have even come to regard it as their due.  Is it any wonder that they express outrage when this privilege is at all threatened?

There's an old saying that states, roughly, that the nail that sticks up will eventually be hammered. Well, yes, that's true, and unlike other carpertry-related sayings, such as "Measure twice, cut once" is actually somewhat related to the human condition in general (although "measure twice, cut once" is a good rule of thumb, generally speaking). So here we are, atheist, agnostics, and plain ol' skeptics, sticking up from the rest of the nails, waiting for the inevitable hammer to knock us into place. But the metaphor breaks down in the face of human resiliency. We may get beat up, hammered down, sanded, spackled, and otherwise treated like a penny nail, but we can get up again. In fact, we MUST get up again, if only to spit in the eye of the bastard with the tool belt.
