Input Format Changes Underway

The Neural Gourmet | 2007-02-17 17:57

Updated 8:56PM EST — One last update. Normal authenticated users no longer get their own blog. This is part of the restructuring going on here and a lame attempt to drive more traffic to the forums (which are being overhauled as well). It is also part of a change in editorial policy which will be announced in time. If you previously blogged here and no longer have access to make blog posts, please contact me about becoming a contributor.

Updated 8:50PM EST — I was going to install the quicktags module to give BBCode users the ability to highlight text and click a button to tag it. Unforunately, quicktags does not support selectively enabling by role (or even any way to distinguish among different types of input forms) so that's out for now. But for those of you wanting an input format closer to what you're used to on some of the mainstream bulletin boards, BBCode is fully working (he says before testing) and should do what you want. Again, let me know which input format you want to be placed into and I'll take care of it. Contributors, since I prefer you use TinyMCE I'm going to just assign you to the tinymce editor and turn it on for you. Give a shout out if that doesn't work for some reason.

Updated 8:39PM EST — OK, I think I've got this working. Per usual, you may experience some discomfort. Most normal people should get the BBCode input format. However, if you're not getting the input format you'd like to use, then just let me know and I'll change your settings.

I'm currently doing a major overhaul on Neural Gourmet's input formats subsystems. Several people have expressed a desire to use BBCode (used by popular bulletin boards) or Markdown syntax in place of the TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor. This makes a lot of sense, especially for those who only want to post in the forums.

So, what I'm doing is setting Neural Gourmet up to handle these three types of input formats.

Basic BBCode format will be the input format available to anonymous and regular authenticated users.

Regular authenticated users, and other roles will be able to ask for permission to use Markdown or TinyMCE in place of BBCode. Whichever input format you want to use, just let me know by using the feedback link at the top of the page. I'd prefer contributors to use TinyMCE since it allows the richest editing environment as well as easy (or at least not too terribly painful) access to uploading and including inline images in their posts.

These changes are going to take a while (perhaps several hours), but everybody already has access to BBCode. If you aren't familar with BBCode (chances are you are, but you might not know it by name) you can access the composition tips page for assistance.

Let me know if you have any problems and I'll update this post when I've completed the changes.

Thanks gang,
-- L.
