Amanda Monaco of The Lascivious Biddies
Amanda Monaco of The Lascivious Biddies

A few weeks ago, Rich and John from Bloodthirsty Vegetarians introduced me to The Lascivious Biddies, an all female jazz vocal quartet from New York City. You know how every now and then you stumble across a piece of music or a performer that just instantly clicks with you, that just makes you say out loud, "Oh wow!"? Well, that's what it was like for me the first time I heard the Biddies -- except there's four of them which made the experience that much greater. And I know Rich and John are equally enamored of Amanda, Lee Ann, Deidre and Saskia.

So when I found out that Amanda had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis last year I was very much sad to learn the news. She's doing fine so far, thankfully, but many people aren't as lucky. As you probably know, MS is an autoimmune disorder that affects your Central Nervous System. The effects can be wide ranging and severe, affecting walking, vision, sensation and cognitive functions. There is no cure.

On April 23rd, 2006 the Biddies and Team Biddy will be participating in the 2006 NYC MS Walk at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan to help raise money in the fight against MS. The Biddies' goal is to raise $10,000 and they're well on their way but they need everyone's help to meet, and hopefully exceed, their goal. Of the money raised 100% of it goes to fund research into Multiple Sclerosis and provide community support for people with MS.

I'm asking everybody who visits Neural Gourmet to contribute to Team Biddy. I'm setting a goal of $500 from Neural Gourmet's visitors. At just $10 per person we can raise that $500 goal in no time. I know times are really tight but if you can give more it's for a good cause and if you can't then even just $5 is a step toward helping to treat and eliminate this awful disease.

You can donate directly to Team Biddy at the MS Walk website. After you've donated, contact me with your name and the amount you donated so I can keep track of our goal. I won't post the amount you donated but unless you ask to remain anonymous, I'll post your username (or whatever name you want to use) on the honor roll in the first comment to this post.

As a little bonus for taking the time to read this, and hopefully donating a little money, here's a little mini-Biddies concert. All of the material here is taken from the PodSafe Music Network, plus the Biddycast intro and Amanda's MS Walk promo, so you won't be depriving the Biddies of any CD sales. However, if you like what you hear then head on over to The Lascivious Biddies website to check them out and buy one of their albums or their new DVD. But above all, please give today toward beating MS.

$500. That's such a small number. Surely the Neural Gourmet community is at least that generous.

What a terrifying experience this must be for Amanda. I wish her the best.

Ricardus | 2006-04-04 22:14 |  The Bids

John introduced me to the Biddies many months ago, and I was immediately enchanted by their music.  Then, after playing their stuff on our show a few times, a friend who is on a local college's student activities board booked them into his school to play.  So we got to see them play a few Fridays ago.  It was an awesome show.  They're talented, smart, sweet, and pretty easy on the eyes.

In a nutshell, they're the BOMB,  and it was so nice to meet them.

Ya know, one of the cool things about this blog/podcast community, IS the community.  One of our listeners does the yearly MS bike ride in her community (the same day as the MS Walk in NY City) , and used to ride in honor of two friends of hers who had MS.  I believe those two people are no longer with us, but the woman continues to do the MS ride.  It's one of her favorite things.  When she had heard about the Biddies and Amanda on our program, she decided to dedicate this year's ride (and all future ones I bet) to Amanda from the Biddies.  The really beautiful piece of synchronicity here is that the Bids happen to be playing a gig in Florida near to our listener a few weeks before the MS Ride, so our listener (who loves their music) is going to see them play, and emailed Amanda to ask her if she would sign the MS-Ride cycling jersey that she will be wearing in ride.  Amanda of course said yes.  So we're all very excited that our little podcast was able to help these two lives (more, really) to intersect, and to allow these great things to happen.

I already donated to the effort on the Biddies web site, so I can't say that I was a part of the NG efforts to raise $500, but I'm thrilled that you are all participating.  Thanks.

Rich...
