This has been floating around the godless blogosphere. I saw a post about it at The Uncredible Hallq linking to it on God is for Suckers!. So you might have seen it already. If you haven't then you're going to want to give this little video a watch. Even if you have seen it you might want to watch again. This is the updated version which was uploaded to YouTube on July 1st.
As far as the video goes, it's great. Really fantastic. And I think utterly doomed to fall on deaf ears although it's sure to become a favorite of the choir. Let's face it, many of the people we consider great examples of humanity and evidence of atheist morals in action are exactly the ones being vilified by the fundamentalists (and the Republican Party). All those stats are wonderful to see too but unfortunately there is an anti-intellectual bias that cuts deeply through American culture that views all statistics as suspect. That view is only exacerbated by religious fundamentalism. I wasn't too happy with the inclusion of Edison either, who is not the most moral guy I know of, but arguably he contributed greatly to society nonetheless.
If you're digging the music, it's Is This The Real Thing by DJ Madson and is from the documentary The God Who Wasn't There. You can download it at the movie's website.
So what do you all think? We say it all the time that atheists need our own propaganda, but can videos like this do any good?
It would be nice to source them all out. You think things like this can improve the perception of atheists with the community at large?
with their image because, while 90% of the population in America claims to believe in God, only a fraction label themselves as "religious". In other words, they believe in God as a fail-safe, and religion plays very little part in their daily lives. The gap between this cowardly Christianity and atheism is far less than the gap between cowardly Christianity and Fundamentalist Christianity (in my opinion, of course). The wiggle-room that cowardly Christians crave is unavailable in the Fundie's world. A solid campaign to demonstrate the virtues and contributions of atheists to society, then, should resonate with the majority of Americans.
As you say, though, tng, Americans have been taught to hate "experts" and distrust scientists. That's why seeing someone like Christopher Reeve, an inspirational and respected figure, did my heart good. Folks like Bill Gates are also good examples, as no one could argue he hasn't done pretty well for himself, despite lacking God's help.
As far as making progress with Fundies? Give up. They're hopeless. This is the attitude I'm now taking and I find it very liberating. Now, I have to listen to people 25% less of the time! What an energy saver!
btw I saw where the next season of "30 Days", the Morgan Spurlock show on FOX, will include an atheist living with a family of Fundies. It will either be great or infuriating. Either way, it should be interesting.
I really appreciated this video.. Lance Armstrong eh
Pretty Wicked list of Atheists thats for sure, he'll have to update it to include me in there.
