Because God told me to.

Aaron Kinney has an interesting post over at Kill the Afterlife regarding the recent revelations over Lashaun Harris - the mother who threw her three children into the San Fransisco Bay last October. Why did she do it? God told her to.

Many a Christian would protest, "But she was crazy! Any crazy nut could kill their children! Her religion didn't do this!" They would, admittedly, be half correct. Sure, a paranoid schizophrenic with delusional thought disorder doesn't need religion to do crazy things, but it certainly does help. I would suggest one to look up the definition of the word "catalyst."

Check it out.

But you know how I feel about this. Extreme religiosity is a sign of an underlying mental illness, but usually not the cause of the mental illness.

A friend of a friend recently had to go back in the hospital because his schizophrenia had gotten out of control again. He thought he was Jesus. I have to wonder... If we had no cultural framework through which to view the sorts of religious delusions and hallucinations that some mentally ill people experience, then how would these disorders manifest themselves?
