Is there a name for art like this? It's not exactly an optical illusion, but this image very nicely confuses figure and ground and much in the same way as MC Escher illustrates the difficulties of representing a 3D image on a 2D plane. And yet that is what our brain's optic centers do -- they take two offset flat images projected onto our retinas and interpolate a 3D spatial representation out of them. I wonder if there are any naturalistic examples that cause our brain to confuse figure and ground? Nothing man made, but just phenomena or structures found in nature that when viewed from the correct angle mimic the effect of this image?
Sorry, no credit for this image. I found it at one of Dr. Howdy's old blogs. If anyone knows the origin of this image please let me know.I really do.
It seems very Dali-esque to me, but then, I'm a Dali whore. I loves me some Dali.
Escher, as well. My mom has a couple prints that I'm totally asking for when she dies.
Or before, I'm easy.
Doused the Foremain and Mainsail, and doesn't have her Royals set...
The second ship has everything set but main and mizzen stays'ls and stuns'ls
OK, niggling point, but the Age of Sail is one of my "things"
Round and Round it Goes...
I don't usually post here and can't seem to paste the info, but go look it up at Amazon. Great book -- lots of surreal and trompe l'oeil art by a variety of artists.
