We're pariahs in good company

Austin Cline over at About.com's Atheism/Agnosticism guide has a story about Ohio Democrat Mark Ritter who attacked his fellow Democrat, Mike Foley, for receiving support from the Stonewall Democrats (a GLBT Democratic organization) and for standing up for gay citizens' rights by defending gay marriage. Ritter's reaction is predictable, and oh-so-familiar to us atheists after last week.

“I’m getting harassed,” he said. “I’m getting hangup calls, ranting calls where people are calling me lewd names. What they’ve done is immediately go on the attack, as opposed to checking the source and the intent. That letter was in no way, shape or form bashing the gay community. My lack of support for gay marriage is simply this: I’m trying to also be fair to another segment of our populace who think this may not be religiously proper. [emphasis added]

Uh huh. Well, it's good to know where you stand with some people. Thankfully, and very appropriately, Miller's attacks garnered him vocal criticism and the loss of support from the United Auto Workers. Head on over to Atheism.About.com and see what else Austin has to say on this topic. He slams it home as usual.

That's really all I have to say.

"I'm not bashing the gays.  I'm just saying that they're inferior to straights because they offend the religious sensibilities of some people.  But that's not bashing."
