The Leader of the Bland

Modem Butterfly | 2005-12-20 18:12

I hate fucking Dan Fogleberg and I hate that fucking song "Same Old Lang Syne".  If you're anywhere in the English speaking world, and you've reached puberty, you know EXACTLY what song I'm talking about.

Met my old lover in the grocery store,
The snow was falling Christmas Eve.
I stole behind her in the frozen foods,
And I touched her on the sleeve.

She didn't recognize the face at first,
But then her eyes flew open wide.
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse,
And we laughed until we cried.

What an overtly sentimental piece of crap song.  The bridge is absolutely mind-numbing:

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to time.
Reliving in our eloquence,
Another 'auld lang syne'......

Every time I hear this song, I'm reminded of a particularly tender New Year's Eve when I was this close to being perfectly happy with someone who was stunningly, utterly wrong for me, as later events would reveal to both of us.  You never forget your first love I guess, and you never forget Dan Fogelberg.

Just for a moment I was back at school,
And felt that old familiar pain

Ah, words to slit your wrists by.

Our file clerk has this song on CD.  He's been playing it over and over again while he files today.  The file room makes a great echo chamber, by the way.  I suppose I should go in there and make sure he hasn't decided to drink himself to death or something, but shaking an employee violently while yelling, "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?" is not the way to get ISO 9000 compliant.

Besides, that piece of shit song always makes me cry.

Shut Up Wesley | 2005-12-20 23:06 |  I'm glad I'm not the only one.

There are very few songs that I will actually turn off immediately after hearing the first few notes. That's one of them. At least you're with someone who deserves you now, MB. If it helps, think about how much worse it would be if you were in the same boat as the rest of us lonely schmucks. Smiling

The Wheelman | 2005-12-20 23:49 |  I would sneak in while Clerk is at lunch or pissing...

And Mr. Fogey-Bugger would have a  little "accident"...

"She didn't recognize the face at first..."

Left a HELL of an impression, eh, sport?

Round and Round it Goes...
